Celebrating Chapmans of London This Africa Day
Honouring Cultural Heritage Through Every Sip
Africa Day, marked each year on 25 May, celebrates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1963. What began as a political and social statement of unity across the continent has become a broader celebration of African identity, heritage, and global influence.
For many across the diaspora, Africa Day is a moment of cultural pride, an opportunity to reconnect with our roots, champion our contributions, and celebrate the beauty, resilience, and creativity that comes out of Africa.
And what better way to do that than through flavour?
Africa’s food and drink culture is as bold and diverse as its people. Whether it’s the zesty notes of tamarind, the floral complexity of hibiscus, or the layered bittersweetness of the classic Chapman punch, every flavour tells a story. If you’ve spent time in Nigeria, chances are you’ve come across the iconic Chapman, a non-alcoholic cocktail often made with a mix of fanta, sprite, grenadine, Angostura bitters, and garnished with cucumber and citrus. It’s a staple at parties, weddings, and bars, loved across generations.
At Chapmans of London, we’re proudly building on that legacy by introducing African-inspired drinks into contemporary spaces. We’re proving that African flavours don’t have to be watered down, or hidden, they can lead. Chapmans of London was created by a British-Nigerian founder, inspired by a childhood filled with Nigerian traditions and flavours. While our version of Chapman has been refined, with sparkling juices, natural ingredients, and a modern finish, it still carries the essence of that nostalgic drink shared at special gatherings across Nigeria.
That’s why, to many, Chapmans of London represents more than just a drink. It’s a bridge between cultures. A reminder of home. A celebration of heritage — one that’s long overdue on the global drinks scene.
For us, Africa Day is about more than remembrance, it’s about representation.
And we’re here to make sure African flavours don’t remain on the fringes. They belong on premium shelves, cocktail menus, and in everyday moments of joy.
So this Africa Day, we raise a glass to the continent that raised us. If you want to have some Chapmans of London, come to Spitalfields Market on Monday 26th May for an Africa Day celebration.
